Chegodilu / Ring Murukku - Diwali Snacks

Chegodilu , a traditional south indian snack is made with rice flour and other spices. This famous snack is very delicious, crunchy and crispy.

We used to spend our Dussera and Diwali holidays with our cousins at their place. My aunt always used to make these for us to munch. We used to be very happy to help her in making (shaping) these chegodilu . This used to be nice fun for all us.

These are many variations in making chegodilu, with sesame seeds, moong dal, ajwain, Cumin seeds and also with dhalia. This time I made with Sesame seeds, Jeera and moong dal. Lets see how to make these.

1 cup Rice Flour
1 cup Water
1 tablespoon Sesame Seeds
1 tablespoon Split Yellow Moong Dal
1/2 teaspoon Jeera
1/4 teaspoon Salt
1/2 teaspoon Red Chilli Powder
pinch of Asafoetida / Hing
Oil for deep fry

  1. In a bowl, add white sesame seeds, moong dal, jeera, salt, red chilli powder and hing to Rice flour. Boil water.
  2. Add 1/2  cup hot water  to rice flour . Mix it well, then add water spoon by spoon of water until you a smooth dough.(2-3 teaspoons of water should be enough) Let it sit for 30 minutes.
  3. Take 2 tablespoons of oil in a small bowl. Apply oil to your fingers, pinch a lemon sized dough, dip that in oil and roll that  into a thin rope with your fingers on a flat surface. Divide that into two.
  4. Bring the the ends together and close them as shown in pictures.Make 10 of them and leave them to dry. Always keep the dough covered.
  5. Mean while heat oil for deep fry.   Gently drop chegodis in oil. Fry them till golden brown. Take them out, drain on an absorbent paper.
  6. Store them in a stainless steel container. Chegodis will last for 15 days.
